Encouraging Courage - What does that actually mean?

Updated: Dec 18, 2024

Encouraging Courage, that's what we as a company do! Many of our dysfunctional behaviors arise because of insecurity. Therefore we encourage everyone to be courageous and step over these barriers, to get the most out of their lives. However, what does Courage actually mean? Some would say (and even Google does) that one of the synonyms of Courage is Fearlessness. However, we believe "Bravery" is a better fit.

Courage is... strength in the face of pain or grief - Oxford Languages

Being fearless is something many people strive for, but it isn't very realistic. Everyone has their fears and saboteurs. Things that hold them back.  This could be the fear of physical pain, loss of someone or something, or even fear of a hurt ego or failure. However, you have the choice to feel the fear, but not let it hold you back.

Courage is... the ability to control fear and to be willing to deal with something that is dangerous, difficult, or unpleasant - Cambridge Dictionary As Dethmer, Chapman and Warner Klemp describe in their book, The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership, we often have fear of things in a made-up future state. Things we are not even sure will happen. Rather than that, they tell us to see fear as a wake-up call for something important that needs attention. An example?  " Fear tells a leader that something important needs to be known. One form involves something that is not faced. Fear is the body's way of saying "wake up!".Fear is either a sign that your body feels something is coming up, which your mind hasn't reacted to yet or it is a moment in which you are learning something new. In both cases, it is something that makes you feel out of control at the moment. Are you afraid of giving presentations in general or just of that one question you might not be able to answer? Are you afraid of hurting your loved one when breaking up, or are you actually afraid of being alone? Make sure to assess what is happening, what you are really afraid of, and then come up with solutions and regain the state of being able to respond rather than react.

Courage is.. the ability to do something that frightens one; bravery - Oxford languages

Therefore, Courage is more about Bravery. You don't have to ignore your fears. Just acknowledge their existence, accept them, take any action to mitigate actual danger, and then choose to withstand them.  Even though we believe Courage is a mindset, we do have some tips on feeling the fear and doing it anyway. You might ask yourself though, why? Why would I go through all the physical and mental pain of courage? Why not just lay back and relax?

Courage is... to be brave and confident enough to do what you believe in - Cambridge Dictionary People naturally want to feel fulfilled. Not many people feel fulfilled while staying at home 24/7 and doing nothing. And, even then your mind would make up some fears. We naturally want to do things we believe in and want to have goals to strive for. Often, overcoming fear, showing courage, and being brave, gives us a major sense of energy and fulfillment. That’s why we say that Eudaemonia may be the answer to your biggest problem.
